So many fascinating things are happening throughout French society and so I just had to set up a blog like La République. I do hope you enjoy my writings.

If you have any thoughts, or simply want to chat, just Tweet me at @_robertguthrie or send me an email using the address at the bottom of this page.

Why France? Read this blog post. If you don’t have time to read that post, then some interesting things to know are: Brexit is changing the European political sphere in which France has deep roots, France currently plays host to a complex and often controversial discussion of laïcité (state secularism) vis-à-vis religious diversity, and the country’s political landscape regularly centres upon the age-old question of finding unity amidst increasing differences.

My interest in everything France goes back to the year I spent as a British Council Language Teaching Assistant in Strasbourg between 2017 and 2018.

I managed to build on the knowledge I gained of French culture, and particularly that of Alsace, in the dissertation I wrote as part of my degree at the University of Glasgow. I undertook a detailed study of the impact of globalisation upon identities there.

I try to keep up with current affairs in France every day by consuming a probably-unhealthy amount of articles, TV news debates, documentaries and Tweets.

A bit more about my journalistic activities, more generally…

My articlesvideos and interviews have been published by The ScotsmanThe NationalThe Scottish FarmerEdinburgh Evening NewsHerefordshire Rural MediaDumfries & Galloway StandardThe Galloway NewsDumfries and Galloway Life Magazine and Comenius News (EU project).

I won the ‘Outstanding Pupil’ prize at the imPRESS Scottish School Media Awards in 2014 and have won eight awards in the Youth Journalism International Excellence in Journalism Contest.

I graduated recently from the University of Glasgow with a first-class honours degree in French and politics. I won the 2020 politics dissertation prize and achieved distinction in spoken French.

Just send me an email or Tweet me for my full CV, or to arrange a Zoom meeting. It would be great to hear from you!
